(Q) What is one thing that the federal government should be doing that it isn't doing or that it is doing but needs to do better? I am interested in seeing the responses here.

Hard to come up with just one but one that hasn't been mentioned is finding a solution to the financial corruption that plagues both parties and dealing with campaign spending in a way that doesn't allow lobbyists to choose our elected officials and that would include unions or corporations. Decisions should be made because they are right-- not because the congressmen got free week-ends here or there etc etc

If I look at current agenda items, there are so many I don't know where to start, and I find it increasingly difficult to draw a clear distinction between Bush and company and the list of items needing attention.
So, I will back off and give you one that is broader in scope and buried deep enough to be totally impossible, other than as a guiding political philosophy.
The fed govt has grown itself so far beyond what the founders intended and prescribed, that it is too burdensome, too heavy-handed, too out of control. The "government" should start monitoring and controlling itself, with the basic tenets of the Constitution as guiding principles. If this could be done, the fed govt would end up as a mere shadow of itself, with a primary duty of defending the country against external threats.
Like I said ... pipedream stuff...
