A Note to Joan

Joan over at Walk This Way seems to think that I hate our "esteemed" Mayor Joe Riley. She is wrong. I believe that Mayor Riley has ruled the City of Charleston for too long (32+years) , but people like Joan keep electing him and singing his praises . That is their right and my right is not to like the Mayor and I have good reasons not to like him. The Sofa Super Store tragedy has tarnished Mayor Riley's carefully erected and protected legacy. It has led "the finest fire chief in America" to announce his retirement after much painful  dissension and acrimony in the ranks of the CFD. Now the city is footing the bill for bringing the Charleston Fire Department up to speed. NOTE : It was Mayor Riley who hired the current Chief . After years of following the party line, the city council is letting his honor know that they want to be part of the process in hiring a new fire chief  and despite what he says one gets the impression that Joe Riley doesn't like for council members to go against his wishes. And this fire opened the floodgates on other problems that the City of Charleston faces. Citizens can put their heads in the sand and praise Joe Riley to the heavens, but this city is in trouble. We need a changing of the guard. That fact is becoming more apparent everyday to any discerning citizen except to sycophants, some old Charlestonians and people who cannot see the forest for the trees !
