I read today in an article on the Reuters website that over 11,000,000 Americans are unemployed. I have always been fortunate in that I always had a job and I have never been laid off or fired either. The old Protestant work ethic was imbued in me early on in my life by my grand mother and mother. Granny said, "The world don't owe you a living". I believe that to be true to this day. However, now millions of hard working Americans are out of work and cannot find work. And the sad prospect is that more will join those eleven million before the situation improves. On unemployed man in Kansas called it an "economic sunami". This bad economy has a trickle down effect - it causes problems in marriages and loss of self respect in people who have worked hard all of their lives. It is like a scar across the face of the land that will not go away. UNEMPLOYED.

High unemployment is bad for all of us, because it snowballs to other businesses that have to down size and so on. I have worked different jobs since I was 11 years old and sometimes worked 3 different part time jobs at the same time while I was in college. There are many opportunities in this nation if you work hard and strive for greatness. I did receive a layoff notice about 15 years ago, but was able to keep my job since so many other people retired or left before the actual layoff hit.
I was hoping that some of the stimulus money would help with jobs and build infrastructure that all of the citizens can use, but it sounds like it is just going to be special programs and pork. They said today that the actual highway spending amounts to only about $1.3 billion per state. That is the amount California's highway paving budget was reduced last year. So much for big plans, they will probably just restore it back to what it was two years ago.

Paul, the trickle down side of this that I see is that the top heavy top end's greed is more at fault. See how many "stimulus" dollars are consumed by attrition long 'ere they depart the beltway...

I am also disappointed in the lack of infrastructure. Some say it would take too long to get into the trough and therefore they need instant spending. More borrowing is what that means and it doesn't make me happy to hear it at all. Same old same old for the programs they are suggesting are stimulus. It's not what Obama said but he will have to fight the right and the left to get what he wanted.
