I said that about those who let the Patriot Act take away our Bill of Rights for safety. Today I'd say the question is-- who decides what our principles should be? Santorum would have one answer and Obama another. Who decides if we abandoned them? I think a Republican and Democrat would answer that very differently

but what Eisenhower was discussing was for a nation and its principles. That is what Santorum is currently pushing also with how we will lose our destiny if we don't end abortion as a legal right.
I could say our principles would be to not allow public education to be destroyed for lower tax rates. Or nobody should have to fear not being able to get basic medical care. You'd likely disagree. That is the problem with these quotes. Words have meaning but we all choose what they were for us and often then condemn those who see it otherwise. It is part of the division in our country and likely always has been because if you study history, you know that we've never been a united people except for brief times when we come together usually over a war...
